The short answer
The micro1 AI interview is a live spoken conversation with Zara, micro1's AI recruiter. micro1 puts it at 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes per skill. You get a certification result in real time and can request feedback if you fail. micro1 publishes no retake policy, so take its free 18-minute practice interview first.
Key takeaways
- micro1's expert library says interviews run 20 to 40 minutes, at about 7 minutes per skill.
- Zara asks open-ended technical and scenario questions. Technical roles add a coding challenge and annotator roles add a human data exercise.
- The result arrives in real time, and you can request feedback if you are not certified.
- micro1 does not publish a retake limit or a waiting period on any page we checked.
- micro1's API docs show the report an employer using the platform gets: a rating per skill, a CEFR soft-skill rating and a proctoring score. micro1 does not say its own certification uses the same fields.
- The free Interview Prep tool runs 18-minute practice interviews by role.
The micro1 AI interview is a live, spoken conversation with Zara, micro1’s AI recruiter. You answer open-ended questions out loud. Technical roles add a coding challenge, and annotator roles add a human data exercise. micro1’s expert library puts the interview at 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes per skill. The result arrives in real time, and you can request feedback if you aren’t certified. micro1 does not publish a retake limit or a waiting period, so plan as if you get one attempt, and take the free 18-minute practice interview for your role before the real one.
Everything about micro1 on this page comes from micro1’s own public pages (expert library, website, candidate terms, privacy policy and API documentation) and one 2025 paper by micro1 staff, checked on 2026-10-06. Offermic is not affiliated with micro1.
Where you meet Zara
micro1 recruits experts for AI training work. Its expert library says Zara “conducts the interview for all candidates applying to roles on the platform.” You either apply to a role on the Opportunities portal, in which case the library says Zara’s questions are tailored to the skills that role requires, or validate a skill directly on the platform. The interview guide says the interview is available on demand, at any time. Passing, followed by an ID check, makes you certified, which micro1 defines as joining the talent pool that is eligible for projects.
micro1 also offers the interview platform to other employers through its AI Recruiter API. If your Zara interview came from another company, that employer chose the skills, the language, whether there is a coding round and whether proctoring is on, and it decides what happens with your result. micro1’s pages don’t name those employers. The rest of this page covers micro1’s own certification interview.
How long the interview takes
micro1’s pages give more than one figure.
| micro1 page | What it says |
|---|---|
| Expert library, Introduction | 20 to 40 minutes, “depending on how many skills the candidate is evaluated on”; one skill “generally takes around 7 minutes” |
| Guide for trade workers (May 2026) | “a short AI interview” with Zara, about 20 minutes |
| Interview Prep tool | Each practice interview is labelled 18 minutes |
| Expert support program | Candidate feedback is “already shaping shorter, faster interviews” |
The figures fit together if length tracks the number of skills: three skills at 7 minutes each is about 21 minutes of questions. micro1 doesn’t publish how much time the coding challenge or the human data exercise adds. Our view: block an hour.
What Zara asks
The interview guide lists four kinds of content:
- “Open-ended technical questions based on your chosen role.”
- “Scenario-based questions to evaluate how you think, problem-solve, and communicate.”
- “Coding challenge for technical roles.”
- “Human data exercise for annotator roles.”
micro1’s question page says “No two candidates receive the same questions” and that Zara adapts to your background. The candidate terms also require you to keep interview questions confidential. So a leaked question list is of little use. What micro1 does publish is the style, with examples for five roles. Two of them:
- Full-stack web developer: “How would you approach diagnosing and resolving a sporadic, high-latency issue in a production system where multiple services and databases are involved?”
- Project manager: “A core technical lead suddenly goes on medical leave during the last two weeks of delivery. Walk us through your contingency planning, knowledge transfer, and risk mitigation strategy.”
The full-stack examples ask you to reason through a diagnosis, a design or a trade-off out loud. The physics examples ask you to explain a concept and what follows from it. None can be answered with a one-line definition.
For soft skills, micro1’s examples include “How do you manage uncertainty when making decisions?” and “Tell me about a project where communication broke down. What would you do differently?”, plus a question about a disagreement with a team member. These are standard behavioral questions; see conflict with a team member and a difficult decision.
The coding challenge. micro1’s candidate pages don’t describe it. The API documentation, which shows how the same platform is configured, lists 13 languages including Python, JavaScript, Java and C++, lets the interview creator fix one or leave the choice to you, and notes: “The candidate won’t be able to use outside libraries.” micro1 doesn’t say whether its own certification uses those settings.
The human data exercise. micro1 names it but doesn’t describe it. The closest official hint is the data annotation page of its Interview Prep tool, which lists three skills (instruction following, attention to detail, logical reasoning) and sample questions such as “How do you handle ambiguous data during annotation for AI training?”
How you are scored
micro1 doesn’t publish the pass mark. The interview guide only says the result tells you whether you meet its “global certification criteria”.
What is public is the shape of the report. micro1’s API documentation lists what an interview report contains:
- Each skill: written feedback and one of four ratings: Not experienced, Junior, Mid-level or Senior.
- Soft skills: for interviews in English, a rating on the CEFR language scale from A1 to C2, with sub-scores for vocabulary, grammar and critical thinking. Interviews in other languages use a scale from Not Experienced to Excellent.
- Coding: its own rating and feedback when there is a coding round.
- Proctoring: a proctoring score and a list of violations.
- Record: a transcript and the video recording.
One caveat: that documentation describes the report an employer receives. micro1 doesn’t state that its own certification uses exactly these fields, although its research summary on Zara describes a skills report with a CEFR-style soft-skill rubric, and its privacy policy confirms the interview produces an “assessment and proctoring score”.
The AI is not the last step for a role. The privacy policy says the automated overall assessment of your candidacy for a position “will be reviewed by a human evaluator before a final decision is made.” micro1 doesn’t say whether a person also reviews the real-time certification result.
Our view: CEFR is a scale of language proficiency. If the soft-skill rating uses it, how clearly you speak English is measured separately from what you know, so organised spoken answers count even in a technical interview.
Proctoring and the rules you agree to
The candidate privacy policy says micro1 collects audio and video recordings of the interview, “Screen sharing recordings for technical assessments”, and “information collected from our proctoring tools to assess the integrity of your interviews”.
The API documentation, which describes the report an employer using the platform receives, is more specific. It lists three violation types: tab_switch, eye_movement and ai_classifier. Its example entry reads “3 tab switches detected, indicating multitasking or external searches.” micro1 doesn’t explain how the AI classifier works or how the proctoring score affects certification.
The candidate terms (last updated July 21, 2026) add these rules:
- Your answers must be “your original work product”, given “without any third-party assistance” unless the interviewer or the instructions explicitly allow it.
- You may not copy or screenshot the interview.
- Breaking the terms can end your access, and micro1 “may also report any violation of these Terms to prospective employers.”
Our view: treat it as closed-book. Close other tabs and apps before you start, keep notes off the desk, and look at the screen while you think. Reading an answer from a second window breaks the terms and is the behavior the tab-switch and eye-movement checks in that documentation exist to catch.
Setup, and what to do if the interview won’t load
micro1 doesn’t publish minimum device or browser requirements. Its guide to AI training jobs says to treat the interview like a professional one: “quiet space, stable connection, camera on”.
Its troubleshooting guide (September 8, 2026) covers the most common failure: the page opens but the session never loads, because security software, an ad blocker or a VPN blocked a request. micro1’s fixes, in order:
- Reload, then open the link in a private window. If it works there, a browser extension is the cause.
- Try another browser. micro1 says “Chrome and Edge are the safest bets.”
- Switch to your phone’s hotspot, and turn off any VPN.
- Add
*.micro1.aito your security software’s allow list. The interview runs oninterview.micro1.ai.
If nothing works, email support@micro1.ai with your interview link, browser, security software and a screenshot of the browser console. The guide says that if your interview time is close, you should say so and micro1 can reschedule.
Result, feedback and retakes
Result and feedback. The interview guide promises “A real-time result” on whether you meet the certification criteria, and lists “The option to request feedback if certification is not achieved.” micro1’s guide to AI training jobs words it differently: “Detailed feedback is provided if you don’t pass”. An arXiv paper by micro1 staff (April 2025, not peer-reviewed) describes it: you request it, it arrives by email, and it names two to three strengths and two to three areas to improve, “explicitly excluding soft skills and communication”. The format may have changed since.
Retakes. micro1 does not publish how many attempts you get, how long you must wait, or whether you can re-certify a skill you failed. None of the micro1 pages in our source list states a retake rule. Third-party guides quote waiting periods; micro1’s pages confirm none of them. What micro1 does say:
- If you don’t pass, “you can apply to other roles in the meantime.”
- The expert support program lists a right to appeal a rejection through “a defined path”, without describing the path.
- The privacy policy says you can appeal a decision based on automated technologies by emailing privacy@micro1.ai.
If a retake matters to you, ask support@micro1.ai before the interview, not after.
Accommodations. The only published process is for New York City residents, who can request “an alternative selection process or a reasonable accommodation” by emailing privacy@micro1.ai. Elsewhere, write to support before you start.
After you pass
- ID check. The library says you verify your identity through a third-party provider with a passport, driver’s license or national ID, using the original physical document. IDs in English or Arabic are usually verified within minutes; others can take up to 72 hours.
- Certification is not a contract. The experts FAQ says “Certification does not guarantee immediate placement”. The guide to AI training jobs says certified experts are “typically updated on their application status within 30 days.”
- Check the sender. micro1 says its official emails come from @micro1.ai, @micro1.io or @micro1.co.
- Check your country. The experts FAQ lists countries and regions whose residents micro1 cannot hire. Read it before you spend time on the interview.
How to prepare
Pick the skill you can go deepest on. The interview guide’s first tip is to “Choose one core skill or job type you want to be evaluated on.”
Take micro1’s practice interview first. The Interview Prep tool is free and covers hundreds of roles. You pick the position, take an AI practice interview labelled 18 minutes, and get feedback. Run it on the computer, browser and network you’ll use for the real interview.
Rehearse reasoning out loud. For each published example question in your field, speak a two-minute answer: your approach, the steps in order, the trade-off you’d accept, and one case from your own work. A friend can play interviewer, and so can an AI mock interview: Offermic, the app we make, runs spoken mock interviews from your resume and a job posting, asks follow-ups and scores each answer. Use tools like this before the interview, never during it. For behavioral questions, the STAR method keeps a spoken answer in order.
Example: an annotator-role question from micro1’s practice page, “How do you handle ambiguous data during annotation for AI training?”
“I'd use my best judgment and pick the label that seems most likely. If I'm not sure, I move on quickly so I don't slow the project down, because speed matters a lot in annotation work.”
Why it falls flat: No method. It treats ambiguity as a guess and puts speed ahead of consistency.
“First I check whether the guidelines already cover the case, because most ambiguity turns out to be a rule I haven't read closely. If they don't, I label it the way the nearest documented example was labelled, leave a note explaining why, and flag it to the reviewer so the rule gets written down. On a sentiment task, sarcastic product reviews kept splitting our annotators. I collected ten of them and proposed labelling the literal complaint and tagging sarcasm separately. The lead approved it and added it to the guidelines.”
Why it works: A repeatable process (guidelines, nearest precedent, note, escalate) and one concrete case that shows your own decision. It gives Zara something specific to follow up on.
Both answers are written for illustration; they aren’t real cases.
Ask when a question is unclear. micro1’s 2025 paper says Zara can “dynamically respond to candidate requests for clarification, additional context, and explanations.”
Our general guide on how to pass an AI interview covers pacing and pauses, and the Mercor interview page covers a similar platform that does publish its retake limit. Alignerr also calls its AI interviewer Zara, though neither company’s documentation mentions the other; its rules are on our Alignerr interview page.
What micro1 does with your recording
The expert library says the session is recorded so human recruiters can review results and match you to roles. In the privacy policy, micro1 reserves the right to use de-identified interview data, including audio, video and transcripts, to train its own machine learning models, and says it does not share your data with AI model companies to train theirs. The policy links a form to opt out of AI training, delete your account or get a copy of your data.
Questions people also ask
How long is the micro1 AI interview?
micro1's expert library says interviews are between 20 and 40 minutes long, depending on how many skills you are evaluated on, and that one skill generally takes around 7 minutes. Another micro1 guide describes a short interview of about 20 minutes. micro1 does not publish how much time the coding challenge or human data exercise adds.
What questions does Zara ask in the micro1 interview?
micro1 lists four kinds of content: open-ended technical questions based on your chosen role, scenario-based questions about how you think and communicate, a coding challenge for technical roles and a human data exercise for annotator roles. It says no two candidates receive the same questions.
Can you retake the micro1 AI interview?
micro1 does not publish a retake limit or a waiting period. Its pages say you can request feedback if you are not certified, apply to other roles in the meantime, and appeal a rejection through a defined path it does not describe. Ask support@micro1.ai about your own case before relying on a second attempt.
Is the micro1 interview proctored?
Yes. micro1's candidate privacy policy says it records audio and video, records screen sharing for technical assessments, and uses proctoring tools to assess interview integrity. The API documentation for the version of the platform sold to employers lists three violation types: tab switches, eye movement and an AI classifier. micro1 does not say which of them its own certification interview uses.
Is there a practice interview for micro1?
Yes. micro1's Interview Prep tool is free. You pick the position you are interviewing for, take an AI practice interview labelled 18 minutes, and get feedback on your performance.
Does passing the micro1 interview mean you get work?
No. micro1 says certification makes you eligible for projects but does not guarantee immediate placement. After passing you verify your identity with a government-issued ID, and micro1 says certified experts are typically updated on their application status within 30 days.
